June, July, August, September, December, January are the strongest months in Ecuador. Set by altitude rather than season: springlike Andean highlands, hot and humid coast and Amazon, and a warm, equatorial Galápagos with two distinct seasons

Season by season

How the year breaks down for trip planning.

  • Highlands dry season (Jun–Sep) — The driest, clearest window for Quito, Cotopaxi, Quilotoa and Andean trekking.
  • Highlands wetter months (Oct–May) — Afternoon rain is common but rarely blocks travel; landscapes are greener.
  • Coast (Dec–Apr) — Warmer, sunnier beach season on the Pacific coast, with short heavy showers.
  • Amazon (Year-round) — Hot and rainy in every month; river levels shape which lodge activities run.
  • Galápagos warm season (Dec–May) — Warmer air and water, calmer seas, better for snorkelling; brief rain showers.
  • Galápagos cool season (Jun–Nov) — Cooler, drier, choppier seas with the Humboldt current — richer marine life and strong wildlife activity.

Best value window

Highlands wetter months (Oct–May) usually gives the best balance: afternoon rain is common but rarely blocks travel; landscapes are greener. Shifting a trip two or three weeks either side of peak is normally the single biggest saving available.

How long to stay

Most trips to Ecuador work best at 10–15 days, which is enough for Quito, Galápagos Islands, Cuenca without living on transport days.
