Overview

JNTO describes Japan as a country of four distinct seasons with very large climate variation, from subarctic Hokkaido to subtropical Okinawa. Spring and autumn generally offer the most comfortable sightseeing conditions; the rainy season runs roughly from early June to mid-July in much of the country, summers are hot and humid, typhoon season peaks around August–September, and winters are cold and snowy in the north and mountains while Okinawa stays mild.

Climate: Four distinct seasons with very large regional variation, from subarctic Hokkaido to subtropical Okinawa.

Plan 10–16 days to see Japan without rushing. Shorter trips work best from a single base; longer trips justify a second region.
