JNTO describes Japan as a country of four distinct seasons with very large climate variation, from subarctic Hokkaido to subtropical Okinawa. Spring and autumn generally offer the most comfortable sightseeing conditions; the rainy season runs roughly from early June to mid-July in much of the country, summers are hot and humid, typhoon season peaks around August–September, and winters are cold and snowy in the north and mountains while Okinawa stays mild.

The places worth building a trip around

Each of these has its own page with timing, budget and getting-around notes.

  • Tokyo (City) — Endless neighbourhoods, food and late-night energy.
  • Kyoto (City) — Temples, machiya streets and refined seasonal food.
  • Osaka (City) — Street food capital with a loud, friendly nightlife.
  • Hiroshima (City) — Peace Memorial sites plus the nearby island of Miyajima.
  • Hokkaido (Region) — Powder snow in winter, cool hiking in summer.
  • Okinawa (Island) — Subtropical beaches and a distinct island culture.
