Overview
Indonesia spans thousands of islands across more than 5,000km, straddling the equator between the Indian and Pacific oceans. Bali is the entry point for most first visits, but Java holds the country's great temples and volcano hikes, Komodo and Raja Ampat rank among the world's best diving, and Sumatra and Borneo hold rainforest and orangutans. Because the archipelago crosses the equator, there is no single national season: southern islands including Bali, Java and Nusa Tenggara follow a roughly April–October dry season, while parts of Sumatra and Maluku run on different patterns. Plan one or two island groups per trip, not the whole map.
Climate: Tropical and hot year-round, with humidity rather than temperature as the variable; southern islands have a dry season roughly April–October and a wet season November–March.
Plan 12–18 days to see Indonesia without rushing. Shorter trips work best from a single base; longer trips justify a second region.

Ranges derived from traveller-reported data of roughly US$23–195 per person per day, averaging around US$64. Bali's south and the luxury villa market run well above that; Java, Sumatra and Lombok run below it. Liveaboard diving in Komodo or Raja Ampat is a separate budget entirely.

Practical information
- Language
- Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia), with hundreds of regional languages; English is common in tourist areas
- Currency
- Indonesian rupiah (IDR)
- Power
- Type C/F, 230V
- Safety
- The real risks are scooter accidents, sea and surf conditions and volcanic activity rather than crime; check current official advice and volcano status before hikes
- Tipping
- Not obligatory; a service charge is often added at hotels and larger restaurants
- Entry
- Entry rules depend on nationality — visa on arrival is available to many, and a tourist levy applies to visitors to Bali. Verify current official requirements before booking.

Dry season (Bali, Java, Nusa Tenggara) · Apr–Oct
The main window for beaches, diving, and volcano hikes on Bromo, Ijen and Rinjani.
Peak · Jul–Aug
Busiest and most expensive on Bali and the Gilis, overlapping European and Australian holidays.
Wet season · Nov–Mar
Heavy afternoon downpours rather than constant rain in most of the south, with lower prices and greener landscapes.
Shoulder · Apr, May, Sep, Oct
Usually the best balance of weather, prices and crowds.
Other regions differ · Varies
Northern and western Sumatra, Maluku and Papua do not follow the Bali pattern — check the specific island before assuming the dry season applies.
Seasonality & crowds

- Peak
National approximation for decision support only — it never affects match scores. It mainly reflects Bali, which absorbs most international arrivals; other islands are far quieter in the same months. Domestic holidays, Nyepi (Bali's day of silence, when the island closes entirely including the airport) and Eid travel create sharp local spikes not visible in a monthly curve.
Informative only — crowd levels do not affect your match percentage.

Getting around Indonesia
- Domestic flights are the practical way to move between island groups and are frequent and inexpensive
- Fast boats link Bali with the Nusa islands, the Gilis and Lombok — sea conditions can cancel them
- Java has a good long-distance train network between Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Surabaya
- Scooters, ride-hailing apps and private drivers with a car dominate short-distance travel on Bali and Lombok
- Ferries connect neighbouring islands cheaply but slowly; allow buffer days around boat legs
