What Indonesia is like in May: weather, crowds, prices and the trips that work best that month.

Yes — May is one of Indonesia's strongest months. Tropical and hot year-round, with humidity rather than temperature as the variable; southern islands have a dry season roughly April–October and a wet season November–March
Weather and crowds
Dry season (Bali, Java, Nusa Tenggara): The main window for beaches, diving, and volcano hikes on Bromo, Ijen and Rinjani. Peak: Busiest and most expensive on Bali and the Gilis, overlapping European and Australian holidays. Wet season: Heavy afternoon downpours rather than constant rain in most of the south, with lower prices and greener landscapes. Shoulder: Usually the best balance of weather, prices and crowds. Other regions differ: Northern and western Sumatra, Maluku and Papua do not follow the Bali pattern — check the specific island before assuming the dry season applies.
What to do in May
Best suited to beach, nature, adventure trips. Good bases this month: Bali, Yogyakarta, Komodo & Flores.
Budget in this month
Plan on roughly $95 a day per person at mid-range (estimate, excluding flights).
