May, June, July, August, September are the strongest months in Peru. Three distinct bands: a sunnier northern coast, a temperate and humid central/southern coast with little rain, dry temperate Andes with large day-night temperature swings, and a hot, rainy Amazon

Season by season

How the year breaks down for trip planning.

  • Andes & Cusco (May–Sep) — The dry Andean season — the standard window for Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and trekking, and the busiest.
  • Lima & central coast (Dec–Mar) — Coastal summer brings the clearest, warmest weather; much of the rest of the year is grey and humid with little rain.
  • Northern coast (Year-round, sunnier) — The north stays sunnier than Lima and supports beach travel across more of the year.
  • Amazon (Year-round) — Hot, tropical and rainy in every month; river levels rather than weather decide what trips run.

Best value window

Lima & central coast (Dec–Mar) usually gives the best balance: coastal summer brings the clearest, warmest weather; much of the rest of the year is grey and humid with little rain. Shifting a trip two or three weeks either side of peak is normally the single biggest saving available.

How long to stay

Most trips to Peru work best at 10–16 days, which is enough for Lima, Cusco, Sacred Valley without living on transport days.
