December, January, February, March, July, August are the strongest months in Sri Lanka. Tropical; two monsoons affecting opposite coasts
Season by season
How the year breaks down for trip planning.
- South & west dry (Dec–Mar) — Peak season for the classic route.
- East dry (May–Sep) — Arugam Bay surf and east-coast beaches.
- Inter-monsoon (Oct–Nov) — Wettest island-wide.
- Hill country (Jan–Apr) — Clearest views for tea country and hikes.
Best value window
East dry (May–Sep) usually gives the best balance: arugam bay surf and east-coast beaches. Shifting a trip two or three weeks either side of peak is normally the single biggest saving available.
How long to stay
Most trips to Sri Lanka work best at 10–16 days, which is enough for Kandy, Ella, Yala without living on transport days.
