When to go to Vietnam: the months that balance weather, crowds and price, plus what each season actually feels like.

March, April, May, November are the strongest months in Vietnam. Strongly regional. The north has a cooler winter and a hot, wet summer; the central coast has a distinct late-year rainy period; the south is tropical year-round with a dry season and a wet season of afternoon downpours
Season by season
How the year breaks down for trip planning.
- Countrywide window (Mar–May) — Generally the most reliable period to combine north, centre and south in one trip.
- North (Oct–Apr) — Drier and cooler; December–February can be genuinely cold in Hanoi and the far-north mountains.
- Central coast (Feb–Aug) — Driest and best for beaches; the late-year months bring the region's heaviest rain and storm risk.
- South (Dec–Apr) — The dry season; May–October brings short, heavy afternoon rain rather than constant grey.
Best value window
North (Oct–Apr) usually gives the best balance: drier and cooler; december–february can be genuinely cold in hanoi and the far-north mountains. Shifting a trip two or three weeks either side of peak is normally the single biggest saving available.
How long to stay
Most trips to Vietnam work best at 12–21 days, which is enough for Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Bình without living on transport days.
