Portugal covers a long Atlantic mainland plus the Madeira and Azores archipelagos, and the tourism authority puts the country at roughly 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. Climate varies strongly with latitude, altitude and distance from the Atlantic: summers are generally hot and dry, the north and interior are cooler in winter, and the Algarve keeps milder winters. It is a strong pick for food, coastline, wine, walkable city breaks, surf, islands and shoulder-season travel.
The places worth building a trip around
Each of these has its own page with timing, budget and getting-around notes.
- Lisbon (City) — Hillside capital for a food-led city break, with viewpoints, tiles and nightlife.
- Porto (City) — Compact river city for food and wine, and the gateway to the Douro Valley.
- Algarve (Coast) — Portugal's beach coast: cliffs and coves in the west, calmer sands and towns in the east.
- Madeira (Island) — Subtropical hiking island with mild weather in every month of the year.
- Azores (Island) — Nine volcanic islands for craters, hot springs, whales and green outdoors.
- Coimbra (City) — Historic university city on the Alfa Pendular line between Lisbon and Porto.
- Alentejo (Region) — Slow inland plains, walled towns, wine estates and an empty Atlantic coast.
Pairing them up
Lisbon to Porto by rail: Two cities plus a wine-valley detour, no car needed. Route — Lisbon → Coimbra → Porto → Douro Valley.
What the country is strongest for
Portugal rates highest for beach, food, culture, nature, which is a good sanity check before committing.
