When to go to Chile: the months that balance weather, crowds and price, plus what each season actually feels like.

November, December, January, February, March are the strongest months in Chile. Extreme north-to-south range: hyper-arid Atacama desert, Mediterranean central Chile, wet temperate south, and cold, windy Patagonia — seasons are austral (summer Dec–Feb)

Season by season

How the year breaks down for trip planning.

  • Patagonia season (Nov–Mar) — The only reliable window for Torres del Paine and the far south; long daylight, strong wind, and most services closed outside it.
  • Central Chile summer (Dec–Feb) — Hot and dry in Santiago and the coast; wine country and beaches at their busiest.
  • Atacama (Year-round) — Extremely dry in every month. Nights are cold at altitude and the 'Bolivian winter' can bring brief summer rain to the altiplano.
  • Lake District (Dec–Mar) — Best for volcano hikes and lakes; the same region is very wet from May to August.
  • Ski season (Jun–Sep) — The Andes near Santiago and Chillán operate a full winter season while much of the south is closed to hikers.

Best value window

Central Chile summer (Dec–Feb) usually gives the best balance: hot and dry in santiago and the coast; wine country and beaches at their busiest. Shifting a trip two or three weeks either side of peak is normally the single biggest saving available.

How long to stay

Most trips to Chile work best at 12–18 days, which is enough for Santiago, San Pedro de Atacama, Torres del Paine without living on transport days.
