Around $55 a day per person covers simple accommodation, local food and public transport. That's the mid-range end of Chile.
Cheapest months to go
Peak is November, December, January, February, March. The weeks either side of that window usually carry most of the weather with much less of the price.
Getting around for less
Realistic options in Chile:
- Domestic flights are essential — Santiago to Punta Arenas is over 3,000km
- Long-distance buses are comfortable, frequent and much cheaper than flying
- Car rental is the best option for the Lake District, wine valleys and Carretera Austral
- Patagonia transfers (Punta Arenas–Puerto Natales–Torres del Paine) run on fixed schedules — book ahead
- Santiago has an extensive metro; the city itself needs no car
Where to base yourself
Fewer bases means fewer paid transfers. Santiago, San Pedro de Atacama, Torres del Paine cover a lot between them.
