December, January, February, March, April are the strongest months in Dominican Republic. Tropical maritime and warm all year, with a drier, slightly cooler winter, a wetter May–November period and cooler air in the mountain interior
Season by season
How the year breaks down for trip planning.
- Drier winter (Dec–Apr) — The most reliable beach weather and the busiest, most expensive stretch of the year.
- Whale season, Samaná (Mid-Jan–mid-Mar) — Humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay — a fixed seasonal window, not a year-round activity.
- Shoulder (May–Jun) — Warm with heavier showers and noticeably better value.
- Hurricane season (Jun 1–Nov 30) — The official Atlantic hurricane season, with peak activity typically Aug–Oct. Storms are not constant, but travel insurance and flexible bookings matter.
- Mountains (Year-round) — Jarabacoa and the Cordillera Central stay cooler than the coast in every month.
Best value window
Shoulder (May–Jun) usually gives the best balance: warm with heavier showers and noticeably better value. Shifting a trip two or three weeks either side of peak is normally the single biggest saving available.
How long to stay
Most trips to Dominican Republic work best at 7–10 days, which is enough for Punta Cana & Bávaro, Santo Domingo, Samaná Peninsula without living on transport days.
