Around $55 a day per person covers simple accommodation, local food and public transport. That's the affordable end of Dominican Republic.
Cheapest months to go
Peak is December, January, February, March, April. The weeks either side of that window usually carry most of the weather with much less of the price.
Getting around for less
Realistic options in Dominican Republic:
- Resort transfers cover most Punta Cana trips and are usually pre-booked with the hotel
- Car rental is the practical way to combine the north coast, Samaná and the mountains
- Guaguas (shared minibuses) and long-distance coach lines connect the main towns cheaply
- Domestic hops between Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata and Samaná save long drives
- Distances look short but mountain and secondary roads are slow — budget more time than the map suggests
Where to base yourself
Fewer bases means fewer paid transfers. Punta Cana & Bávaro, Santo Domingo, Samaná Peninsula cover a lot between them.
