May, June, September, October are the strongest months in France. Four distinct zones: oceanic west, more continental centre and east, Mediterranean southeast, and mountain climate in the Alps and Pyrenees
Season by season
How the year breaks down for trip planning.
- Spring (Apr–Jun) — Excellent for cities, gardens and countryside before the summer peak.
- Summer (Jul–Aug) — Peak nationwide and especially on the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts.
- Early autumn (Sep–Oct) — Harvest season in wine regions with easier crowds.
- Winter (Dec–Mar) — Ski peaks in the Alps and Pyrenees, plus Christmas-market and city demand.
Best value window
Summer (Jul–Aug) usually gives the best balance: peak nationwide and especially on the mediterranean and atlantic coasts. Shifting a trip two or three weeks either side of peak is normally the single biggest saving available.
How long to stay
Most trips to France work best at 7–12 days, which is enough for Paris, Provence, French Riviera without living on transport days.
