Around $95 a day per person covers simple accommodation, local food and public transport. That's the higher cost end of France.

Cheapest months to go

Peak is May, June, September, October. The weeks either side of that window usually carry most of the weather with much less of the price.

Getting around for less

Realistic options in France:

  • High-speed and regional rail is the primary way to move between regions
  • Regional trains and coaches reach smaller towns and valleys
  • A car is useful for Provence, the Dordogne, Brittany and rural wine routes
  • Cycling routes and mountain transport are well developed in season

Where to base yourself

Fewer bases means fewer paid transfers. Paris, Provence, French Riviera cover a lot between them.
