Season by season
How the year breaks down for trip planning.
- Spring (Apr–Jun) — Comfortable sightseeing temperatures and lighter crowding than midsummer.
- Summer (Jul–Aug) — Warmest months; festival season and the peak of Lake Balaton demand.
- Autumn (Sep–Oct) — Mild days and the wine-harvest period in Tokaj and Eger.
- Winter (Nov–Mar) — Cold and often grey, but thermal baths and Advent markets are at their best.
Best value window
Summer (Jul–Aug) usually gives the best balance: warmest months; festival season and the peak of lake balaton demand. Shifting a trip two or three weeks either side of peak is normally the single biggest saving available.
How long to stay
Most trips to Hungary work best at 4–8 days, which is enough for Budapest, Lake Balaton, Eger without living on transport days.
