Around $55 a day per person covers simple accommodation, local food and public transport. That's the affordable end of Hungary.
Cheapest months to go
Peak is April, May, June, September, October. The weeks either side of that window usually carry most of the weather with much less of the price.
Getting around for less
Realistic options in Hungary:
- National rail radiates from Budapest to Lake Balaton, Eger, Pécs, Debrecen and Tokaj
- Intercity coaches cover towns the railway misses
- Budapest has metro, tram, trolleybus and bus services on one ticketing system
- A car helps for wine regions and the Balaton shoreline, but is not needed for a capital trip
- Danube boat services operate seasonally around Budapest and the Danube Bend
Where to base yourself
Fewer bases means fewer paid transfers. Budapest, Lake Balaton, Eger cover a lot between them.
