January, February, March, June, July, August are the strongest months in Malaysia. Equatorial: hot and humid year-round with high rainfall in every month, and two monsoons affecting opposite coasts at different times

Season by season

How the year breaks down for trip planning.

  • West coast (Penang, Langkawi) (Dec–Mar) — Driest and most reliable window for the Strait of Malacca islands.
  • East coast (Perhentians, Tioman) (Mar–Oct) — The east-coast island season; many resorts and boats close during the northeast monsoon from roughly November to February.
  • Northeast monsoon (Nov–Feb) — Heaviest rain on the east coast and parts of Borneo, with flooding possible in Kelantan and Terengganu.
  • Borneo (Sabah) (Mar–Sep) — Generally drier for Mount Kinabalu, Sipadan diving and river wildlife trips.
  • Kuala Lumpur & inland (Year-round) — Afternoon thunderstorms in most months; rain rarely blocks a city trip. Regional haze can occur in some dry spells.

Best value window

East coast (Perhentians, Tioman) (Mar–Oct) usually gives the best balance: the east-coast island season; many resorts and boats close during the northeast monsoon from roughly november to february. Shifting a trip two or three weeks either side of peak is normally the single biggest saving available.

How long to stay

Most trips to Malaysia work best at 10–16 days, which is enough for Kuala Lumpur, Penang & George Town, Langkawi without living on transport days.
