Where to go in Malaysia
Matching Malaysia's regions and cities to trip types — first-timers, beach weeks, food trips and family holidays.

Malaysia splits into two very different halves separated by the South China Sea: Peninsular Malaysia, with Kuala Lumpur, the heritage cities of George Town and Melaka, tea-country highlands and island beaches; and Malaysian Borneo — Sabah and Sarawak — with rainforest, orangutans, Mount Kinabalu and world-class diving. The country is hot and humid all year, but monsoons matter: the east coast and Borneo are affected by the northeast monsoon roughly November to March, while the west coast islands see more rain from the southwest monsoon around May to September. Multicultural Malay, Chinese and Indian food culture is a headline reason to go in itself.
The places worth building a trip around
Each of these has its own page with timing, budget and getting-around notes.
- Kuala Lumpur (City) — Petronas Towers, hawker centres and the country's transport hub.
- Penang & George Town (Island) — UNESCO-listed heritage shophouses, street art and Malaysia's most famous food city.
- Langkawi (Island) — Duty-free island of beaches, mangroves and a cable car over rainforest ridges.
- Borneo — Sabah (Region) — Orangutans on the Kinabatangan, Mount Kinabalu and the reefs off Semporna.
- Melaka (City) — Portuguese, Dutch and Peranakan layers in a compact World Heritage river town.
- Cameron Highlands (Mountain) — Cool tea plantations, mossy forest trails and strawberry farms above the heat.
- Perhentian & Tioman Islands (Island) — Clear east-coast water, cheap diving and simple beach huts — seasonal only.
- Borneo — Sarawak & Kuching (Region) — Riverfront capital, longhouse culture and the caves of Mulu and Bako.
Pairing them up
