Where to go in Argentina

Matching Argentina's regions and cities to trip types — first-timers, beach weeks, food trips and family holidays.

Argentina is one of the longest countries in the world and the official tourism board frames it that way: it spans subtropical north, temperate central plains and cold, windy Patagonia, so there is no single national travel season. Southern-hemisphere seasons flip the calendar — Argentina Travel positions summer for the Atlantic beaches and Patagonia, winter for the northern provinces and Andean snow sports, and spring and autumn for Buenos Aires, Iguazú and the central regions. Internal distances are large, so plan generous trip lengths and use domestic flights between regions.

The places worth building a trip around

Each of these has its own page with timing, budget and getting-around notes.

  • Buenos Aires (City) — Café culture, steak, tango and famously late nights across distinct neighbourhoods.
  • Mendoza (Region) — Malbec vineyards on high desert plains beneath the Andes, with rafting and Aconcagua nearby.
  • Bariloche (Region) — Northern Patagonian lake district: forests, lake drives in summer and skiing in winter.
  • El Calafate (Region) — Base for the Perito Moreno glacier and the southern Patagonian ice field.
  • El Chaltén (Region) — Argentina's trekking capital, with trailheads to Fitz Roy leaving from the village itself.
  • Iguazú Falls (Park) — Enormous subtropical waterfall system on the Brazilian border, hot and humid year-round.
  • Salta & Jujuy (Region) — Colonial northwest with desert canyons, coloured hills, high-altitude vineyards and Andean culture.
  • Ushuaia (City) — End-of-the-world port for Beagle Channel trips, Tierra del Fuego park and Antarctic sailings.

Pairing them up

Argentina classic: Capital, wine country and southern Patagonia by domestic flights. Route — Buenos Aires → Mendoza → El Calafate → El Chaltén.

What the country is strongest for

Argentina rates highest for nature, adventure, food, nightlife, which is a good sanity check before committing.
