Where to go in Colombia

Matching Colombia's regions and cities to trip types — first-timers, beach weeks, food trips and family holidays.

Colombia sits close to the equator, so the official tourism board is explicit that the country has no four-season calendar: temperature is driven by altitude and geography rather than by month. Broadly, December–March and July–August are the drier periods and April–May and October–November the rainier ones, with clear regional exceptions across the Caribbean coast, the Andean highlands, the Pacific and the Amazon. That variety — plus low costs and cheap domestic flights — makes it one of the strongest all-round value trips in the Americas.

The places worth building a trip around

Each of these has its own page with timing, budget and getting-around notes.

  • Bogotá (City) — High-altitude capital with the country's biggest museums and a cool, changeable climate.
  • Medellín (City) — Valley city with a mild year-round climate, a metro and cable cars, and a strong café culture.
  • Cartagena (City) — Walled Caribbean colonial city, hot year-round, with islands offshore.
  • Coffee Region (Region) — Green Andean valleys, wax palms and working coffee farms around Salento and Armenia.
  • Santa Marta & Tayrona (Coast) — Caribbean base city plus a national park of jungle-backed beaches and coastal trails.
  • San Andrés (Island) — Caribbean island with reef snorkelling and calm, shallow water far off the mainland.
  • Leticia & the Amazon (Region) — River-town gateway to Amazon lodges, wildlife trips and community stays.

Pairing them up

Colombia highlights: Andes to Caribbean by cheap domestic flights. Route — Bogotá → Coffee Region → Medellín → Cartagena.
