Yes — January is one of Malaysia's strongest months. Equatorial: hot and humid year-round with high rainfall in every month, and two monsoons affecting opposite coasts at different times
Weather and crowds
West coast (Penang, Langkawi): Driest and most reliable window for the Strait of Malacca islands. East coast (Perhentians, Tioman): The east-coast island season; many resorts and boats close during the northeast monsoon from roughly November to February. Northeast monsoon: Heaviest rain on the east coast and parts of Borneo, with flooding possible in Kelantan and Terengganu. Borneo (Sabah): Generally drier for Mount Kinabalu, Sipadan diving and river wildlife trips. Kuala Lumpur & inland: Afternoon thunderstorms in most months; rain rarely blocks a city trip. Regional haze can occur in some dry spells.
What to do in January
Best suited to food, nature, beach trips. Good bases this month: Kuala Lumpur, Penang & George Town, Langkawi.
Budget in this month
Plan on roughly $90 a day per person at mid-range (estimate, excluding flights).
