Where to go in Mexico

Matching Mexico's regions and cities to trip types — first-timers, beach weeks, food trips and family holidays.

Mexico is not one trip. Official tourism material organises the country around arts and culture, food, nightlife, nature and adventure, romance and sun-and-beach, and its climate guidance stresses how much conditions vary by region: tropical beach zones often sit around 25–33°C with a rainy season broadly from June to September (and up to May–October in planning terms), while temperate highland cities behave very differently and work much of the year. Pick one or two regions rather than attempting a national loop.

The places worth building a trip around

Each of these has its own page with timing, budget and getting-around notes.

  • Mexico City (City) — Museums, markets and one of the world's strongest restaurant scenes.
  • Oaxaca (City) — Food and craft capital with villages and ruins nearby.
  • Yucatán & Mérida (Region) — Cenotes, Maya sites and colonial Mérida.
  • Riviera Maya & Tulum (Coast) — Caribbean beaches, reefs and boutique hotels.
  • Baja California Sur (Region) — Desert meets sea: whales, diving and quiet coastline.
  • Puerto Vallarta & Riviera Nayarit (Coast) — Pacific beach towns, surf and jungle-backed bays.
  • San Miguel de Allende (City) — Highland colonial town for slow, walkable days.

Pairing them up

Yucatán loop: Colonial city, cenotes, ruins and a Caribbean finish. Route — Yucatán & Mérida → Riviera Maya & Tulum.

What the country is strongest for

Mexico rates highest for beach, food, culture, nature, which is a good sanity check before committing.
