December, January, February, March, April are the strongest months in Panama. Tropical, warm all year, with a Pacific-side dry season roughly December–April, a wetter May–November, and permanently cooler, springlike highlands

Season by season

How the year breaks down for trip planning.

  • Dry season (Pacific side) (Dec–Apr) — The main travel window: driest weather for the city, canal, Pacific beaches and highland hiking.
  • Green season (May–Aug) — Afternoon rain rather than all-day rain in most areas, greener landscapes and lower prices.
  • Wettest (Sep–Nov) — Heaviest rain on the Pacific side. Panama sits south of the main Atlantic hurricane track, but rainfall is significant.
  • Caribbean side (Different pattern) — Bocas del Toro does not follow the Pacific dry season closely and can see rain in any month, often with drier spells around Sep–Oct.
  • Highlands (Year-round) — Boquete and Cerro Punta stay cool and springlike; bring layers in every season.

Best value window

Green season (May–Aug) usually gives the best balance: afternoon rain rather than all-day rain in most areas, greener landscapes and lower prices. Shifting a trip two or three weeks either side of peak is normally the single biggest saving available.

How long to stay

Most trips to Panama work best at 8–12 days, which is enough for Panama City, Bocas del Toro, Guna Yala (San Blas) without living on transport days.
