Where to go in Panama
Matching Panama's regions and cities to trip types — first-timers, beach weeks, food trips and family holidays.

Panama is the isthmus that joins Central and South America, with a Caribbean coast to the north and a Pacific coast to the south — close enough that many itineraries touch both in a single week. Panama City is one of the region's best-connected hubs thanks to Tocumen and the Copa network, which makes short trips and stopovers unusually easy. Beyond the capital and the canal, the draws are the Bocas del Toro and Guna Yala archipelagos, the cool coffee highlands around Boquete, and Pacific surf beaches. The Darién gap in the southeast is not a tourist route.
The places worth building a trip around
Each of these has its own page with timing, budget and getting-around notes.
- Panama City (City) — Glass skyline, the canal locks and the restored colonial quarter of Casco Viejo.
- Bocas del Toro (Island) — Caribbean archipelago of stilt guesthouses, boat trips, surf and easy island hopping.
- Guna Yala (San Blas) (Island) — Autonomous Guna territory of hundreds of tiny palm islands on the Caribbean side.
- Boquete (Region) — Cool coffee highlands under Volcán Barú, with cloud-forest trails and hot springs.
- Santa Catalina & Coiba (Coast) — Pacific surf village and the launch point for diving Coiba National Park.
- Pedasí & the Azuero Peninsula (Coast) — Traditional Azuero towns, festivals and quiet Pacific beaches.
- El Valle de Antón (Mountain) — Village inside a volcanic crater, two hours from the capital — waterfalls and short hikes.
Pairing them up
City, canal, islands: Capital and canal, then the Caribbean. Route — Panama City → Bocas del Toro.
What the country is strongest for
Panama rates highest for beach, nature, adventure, backpacking, which is a good sanity check before committing.
