How to travel Panama cheaply without gutting the trip — daily numbers, cheaper months and where the savings actually are.

Around $55 a day per person covers simple accommodation, local food and public transport. That's the affordable end of Panama.
Cheapest months to go
Peak is December, January, February, March, April. The weeks either side of that window usually carry most of the weather with much less of the price.
Getting around for less
Realistic options in Panama:
- Domestic flights from Albrook reach Bocas del Toro and the far west quickly
- Long-distance buses run the Pan-American Highway from Albrook terminal to David and beyond
- Water taxis link Almirante with Bocas town and the surrounding islands
- Guna Yala (San Blas) is reached by 4x4 transfer plus boat, usually as an organised package
- Panama City has a metro plus ride-hailing; a car is only worth it for the interior and Pacific beaches
Where to base yourself
Fewer bases means fewer paid transfers. Panama City, Bocas del Toro, Guna Yala (San Blas) cover a lot between them.
